What is a Bandsaw?

A bandsaw is a power tool that has a blade that consists of a continuous band of metal with teeth along one edge to cut various work pieces.

There is uniform cutting action because of the evenly distributed tooth load.

Timber mills use large bandsaws for ripping lumber. A bandsaw is preferred over a circular saw because a bandsaw can accommodate large diameter timber and has a smaller cut size, which produces less waste.

A bandsaw can produce straight cuts, but also is useful for cutting irregular or curved shapes.

Bandsaws are used for woodworking, metalworking or for cutting a variety of other materials.

Three Types of Bandsaws

In Timber cutting there are three types of saws that can be used.

Head saws are large bandsaws that make the initial cuts in a log. These generally have a 2 to 3 inch tooth space on the cutting edge and ‘silver teeth’ on the back. These silver teeth are non-cutting teeth and are there to wipe silvers out of the way when the blade needs to back out of a cut.

A resaw is a large bandsaw that is optimized for cutting timber along the grain to reduce larger sections into smaller sections or veneers.  This process requires a large blade, but with a small cutting size to minimize waste.

A double cut saw have cutting teeth on both sides. They are large and similar in size to the head saw.
